It was a sunny Saturday afternoon in May 2010, and Laszlo Hanyecz was feeling hungry. He decided to order two pizzas from Papa John’s, his favorite pizza chain. But instead of paying with cash or credit card, he had a different idea. He wanted to pay with Bitcoin, a new digital currency that he had been experimenting with for a few months.
Bitcoin was invented in 2008 by an anonymous person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. It was a decentralized, peer-to-peer system that allowed anyone to send and receive payments without intermediaries or central authorities. Bitcoin transactions were recorded in a public ledger called the blockchain, which ensured their validity and security. Bitcoin also had a limited supply of 21 million units, which made it scarce and valuable.
Laszlo was fascinated by Bitcoin and believed it had the potential to revolutionize the world of money. He had been mining bitcoins on his computer, solving complex mathematical problems to generate new coins and verify transactions. He had accumulated about 10,000 bitcoins, which at the time were worth about $41.
He thought it would be fun and interesting to use some of his bitcoins to buy real-world goods. He posted a message on an online forum for Bitcoin enthusiasts, offering to pay 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas delivered to his home in Jacksonville, Florida. He wrote:
“I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas… like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!
I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc… just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire.
If you’re interested please let me know and we can work out a deal.
Thanks,
